  • Anchorage Culinary Delights: A Foodie's Guide to Where to Eat

During my recent trip to Alaska, we spent a few days exploring Anchorage and I had the opportunity to eat at a few delicious restaurants. Here are some of my favorites! Wild Scoops - A ice cream shop serving up delicious frozen treats made with local ingredients. It was so good that I went twice during my trip! I got the Rhubarb Crumble which is a cinnamon-nutmeg base with rhubarb jam and an oaty streusel on a waffle cone. To top it off I asked for “Alaskan Baked” which added a layer of toasted marshmallow topping on the ice cream! It was delicious. 49th State Brewing - A local restaurant and brewery with two locations, one in Anchorage and the other in Denali. This eatery serves award-winning beer and tasty meals. For an appetizer, we tried their Bavarian Handmade Pretzel which has won many foodie awards, and the halibut and chips. Snow City Cafe - Located in downtown Anchorage, this brunch spot is serving up mouthwatering dishes from benedicts to pancakes to sandwiches and more. I tried their walnut-berry cream cheese stuffed French toast with a side of reindeer sausage. These are a few of the many great restaurants in Anchorage!

Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast eager to explore scenic trails or chase waterfalls, a foodie on the hunt for the next culinary adventure, or a culture buff ready to dive into the local arts scene, Portland has something to captivate every visitor. Portland is a quick 2-hour flight from San Diego, making this city a great place for a long weekend getaway.  In this post, I'll share the must-visit spots and the best things to do during a trip to Portland.  Best Stay: The Duniway Portland Nestled in the heart of downtown, the Duniway Portland Hotel offers a distinctive blend of modern luxury and classic charm. The hotel features elegantly appointed rooms and suites, each thoughtfully designed with plush bedding, state-of-the-art amenities, and stylish decor that reflects the vibrant energy of Portland. Guests can indulge in culinary delights at the hotel's signature restaurant and sip coffee in the cafe near the lobby.  The Duniway's prime location provides easy access to some of Portland's iconic attractions and neighborhoods. Just steps away from the hotel, visitors can explore the bustling Pioneer Courthouse Square, often called Portland's living room, home to several local food carts.  The hotel's proximity to the city's MAX light rail system and other public transportation options makes it an ideal base for exploring the wider Portland area. Whether you're visiting for business or leisure, the Duniway Portland Hotel offers a unique and luxurious experience that captures the essence of this eclectic and dynamic city. Best Brunch:  Screen Door Pearl District This was my favorite place to eat brunch in Portland. The menu at Screen Door excels in delivering mouth-watering Southern classics. I ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich, the chicken was so tender and flavorful. I also tried their cinnamon roll and it was so delicious, not overly sweet, and just the right amount of icing.   Among the must-try dishes is the iconic Screen Door Fried Chicken, which boasts a perfect blend of crispy, flavorful batter, and tender, and juicy meat.  The Chicken and Waffles, are a harmonious combination of sweet and savory. For those with a sweet tooth, the Bananas Foster French Toast is a decadent treat that perfectly caps off a satisfying meal. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty breakfast, a leisurely brunch, or a comforting dinner, Screen Door in the Pearl District promises an exceptional dining experience that celebrates the best of Southern cuisine. Best Urban Hiking: Macleay Park to Pittock Mansion Macleay Park is a beautiful urban park located in near downtown Portland and is one of the largest urban forests in the U.S. It is known for its dense woodlands and peaceful trails. One of the most popular trails is the Macleay Park to Pittock Mansion Trail . The Macleay Park to Pittock Mansion Trail is a must-visit 5-mile out-and-back hike in Portland for those seeking a blend of natural beauty and historic charm. The trail winds through lush forest, following Balch Creek and leading hikers past towering trees and occasional wildlife. The highlight of the hike is reaching Pittock Mansion, a historic estate perched on a hill with panoramic views of downtown Portland, Mount Hood, and the Cascade Range. The view is named one of the best views in Portland! Best Unique Foodie Experience: Portland Food Carts Before I visited Portland, I had no idea that Portland is one of the best cities to visit for foodies! The city is famous for its vibrant food cart (food carts are similar to food trucks) scene, offering a diverse range of culinary delights from all over the world. These food carts are scattered across the city in various "pods," or clusters, where you can find everything from gourmet burgers and authentic Thai dishes to vegan treats and freshly brewed coffee. The food cart culture in Portland is all about creativity, affordability, and supporting local businesses, making it a favorite among both locals and tourists. Best Local Market: The Portland Saturday Market  The Portland Saturday Market  is one of the largest continuously operating outdoor arts and crafts markets in the U.S. Located in the Old Town Chinatown district along the waterfront, it runs every Saturday and Sunday from March through December. The market features over 150 local vendors offering a wide range of handcrafted goods, from jewelry and clothing to home décor and artwork. In addition to shopping, visitors can enjoy live music, street performances, and a variety of food stalls serving international and local cuisine Best Waterfall: Multnomah Falls  This is one of those experiences that is worth the visit and lives up to the hype! Multnomah Falls is one of the tallest year-round waterfalls in the United States and is the most visited nature site in the Pacific Northwest. Just a short drive from Portland, this iconic waterfall in the Columbia River Gorge offers a challenging yet rewarding hike to the top, with stunning views of the falls and gorge along the way. The trail to the top of the waterfall is about 2.3 mi, a paved trail with a steady incline and switchback. The views at the top are amazing! This is easily one of the best waterfalls I’ve seen in the U.S. and one of my favorite things I did during my trip to Portland. Best road trip from the city: Oregon Coastline The Oregon Coast is a breathtaking destination known for its rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and charming seaside towns, making it an ideal escape from the city. The drive from Portland to the coast is just as scenic as the destination, typically taking about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your coastal stop. Along Highway 26 or Highway 6, travelers pass through dense forests, rolling hills, and lush farmlands before reaching the dramatic coastline. Once there, you can explore iconic spots like Cannon Beach with its famous Haystack Rock. I recommend stopping at a local ice cream shop serving Tillamook ice cream!  A weekend getaway in Portland, Oregon, is the perfect way to experience the city’s vibrant culture, stunning natural beauty, and rich history. Whether you’re hiking through Macleay Park, exploring shops and eating delicious food at one of the food cart pods, or enjoying the art and craft treasures at the Portland Saturday Market, this city offers something for every traveler. With so much to do and see, Portland promises an unforgettable weekend filled with adventure, relaxation, and discovery.

  • Temecula, CA City Guide: The Napa Valley of Southern California

Temecula is a city located in southwestern Riverside County, California, approximately 85 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 60 miles north of San Diego. It is known for its beautiful vineyards and wineries, which produce a variety of wines, including Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The city also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival, the Temecula Valley International Film and Music Festival, and the Temecula Rod Run. Best time to visit : September/October: If you want to experience warm weather and beautiful, lush vineyards this is the time to visit. These months are still considered peak tourist season, but if you visit later in October, you might be able to avoid some of the crowds. July/August: Not a bad time to go if you want to stroll through the vineyards, but keep in mind it gets very hot in Temecula. If you go during these months, be prepared to sweat! January/Feb/March: If you want to avoid the crowds, this is a great time to go. The only downside is that it is not harvest season so the vineyards will not be lush and green, but on the upside, you won’t have to deal with all the crowds. Getting there : The best way to travel to and around Temecula is by car. There are also many wine tours you can purchase that will drive you around to different wineries. Where to Stay : There are so many unique places to stay from luxury bed and breakfasts to budget friendly hotels. The Vine House Bed and Breakfast $$$$ This family owned and operated B&B is located on the De Portola Wine Trail. The Vine boasts elegant rooms with fireplaces and gourmet breakfast delivered right to your room. The property is also in walking distance to a few wineries. Ponte Vineyard Inn $$$ This elegant hotel is located on a vineyard and offers luxurious rooms, a spa, and a restaurant. It's rated as one of the top hotels in Temecula. Hampton Inn & Suites Temecula $$ Located in the heart of Temecula Valley Wine Country, this hotel offers comfortable and modern rooms and suites with amenities such as an outdoor pool, fitness center, and complimentary breakfast. Things to do : Wine Tasting - Temecula Valley Wine Country is home to over 40 wineries, making it a popular destination for wine tasting and tours. Many of the wineries are located near De Portola Rd and Rancho California Rd. This area is very easy to get around by car. Our favorite winery in Temecula is Wilson Creek Winery ! This winery is known for their sparkling wines, almond (what they are known for) and peach bellini (my favorite)! They also have delicious red and white wines. During the summer they also have wine slushies available for purchase. Old Town Temecula - This historic district features charming shops, restaurants, and galleries, as well as a weekly farmers' market. This is a very walkable area and a great place to explore. Hot Air Balloon Rides - Take a hot air balloon ride over the vineyards and hills of Temecula for breathtaking views. Spa day at Glen Ivy Hot Springs - Located about 30 min from the city center of Temecula sits a full-service day spa. This spa offers relaxing body and facial treatments, mineral baths, and delicious food. Pechanga Resort & Casino - This large resort features a casino, spa, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Outdoor Activities - There are many outdoor activities to enjoy in Temecula, including hiking, biking, golfing, and horseback riding. Temecula Valley Museum - This museum features exhibits and artifacts that highlight the history and culture of Temecula. Where to Eat : Toast $$ Toast is a popular breakfast and lunch restaurant. It is known for its delicious food and cozy atmosphere and has become a favorite among locals and visitors. The menu at Toast features a variety of breakfast and lunch dishes, with a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Some popular items include the Eggs Benedict and the creme brulee French Toast. The Goat & Vine $$ This local spot offers a menu of wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, and salads, as well as a selection of local wines and craft beers. The restaurant is known for its high-quality ingredients and flavorful dishes and has a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. This is a very popular restaurant, so I recommend visiting their website and joining the waitlist before you arrive. We love the Hatch Chili Honey Chicken Pizza and we’ve heard their Jacked Cappuccino Ice Cream Cake is delicious! Havana Kitchen $$ This restaurant offers a menu of traditional Cuban dishes, such as Ropa Vieja, Cuban Sandwiches, and Picadillo. They are known for its flavorful and authentic cuisine, as well as its lively atmosphere and live music on certain nights. Guests can also enjoy a selection of Cuban cocktails and other beverages. Our favorite sandwich on the menu is the Ropa-Q, made with Cuban pulled pork, grilled onions, and BBQ sauce! Safety : Overall Temecula is a very safe city and has a very low crime rate. We have always felt very safe during our visits. As with any city, it is always best practice to use wisdom when traveling and be aware of your surroundings. Budget : When setting a budget for your trip to Temecula there are many factors to keep in mind. Many of the hotels in this area average about $200 - $300 per night. The price of the hotels varies during weekends and high season. The high season is typically May to June and September to December. With so many wineries to choose from I recommend choosing no more than 3 wineries/day to visit. I recommend this because you will have more time to enjoy the wine tastings and explore the grounds at the winery. The cost of a wine tasting averages $20- $30 per/person and includes 5-6 tastings/person. If you are not a big wine drinker most wineries will let you share your tasting with your companion. The cost of food is high almost everywhere but in California, I would say it’s probably higher than the national average. Most meals will cost about $15.00 - $20.00 per/person. For the cost of transportation, a rideshare will cost an average of $8.00 - $17.00. Wrap up : I hope this Temecula guide is a helpful resource and inspires you to visit Temecula! If you want assistance planning your trip or have questions, don’t hesitate to leave a comment on this post!

  • 4 Best Beaches to Visit in San Diego this Summer

Summer has arrived in San Diego and one of my favorite things to do during the Summer is relaxing at the beach.  San Diego is home to miles of coastline and San Diego beaches are consistently ranked among the USA's best beaches.  Whether you're looking to surf or relax San Diego offers a variety of stunning beaches to suit every preference. Here are four must-visit beaches that promise to make your summer unforgettable. In this post, I've included affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through these links, at no extra cost to you. Local Tip : If you want to swim in the Pacific Ocean, you might be surprised by how cold the water is even during the Summer. The average temperature of San Diego's coastal water hangs around 60 F and peaks around low to mid-70s F in September. There are two reasons for this phenomenon, upwelling- which causes the warm water on the surface to be replaced by the deeper cooler water below, and water currents off the coast of Alaska mixing with the water currents off the coast of California. # 4 La Jolla Shores Beach      La Jolla Shores is a beautiful 1-mile beach located in the coastal community of La Jolla. The beach is popular with visitors and tourists alike and is a popular destination for surfing, and meeting up with friends. What I like most about this beach is the beautiful views of the cove, beachside cliffs and the availability of picnic tables where families can gather to spend time with each other.  Where to Park : Parking is available and free, but during the weekends and summer months, parking can be very challenging, so I recommend arriving early. If the parking lot is full street parking is available, but be sure to pay attention to street signs to avoid parking tickets.  What to do : Relaxing on the beach, surfing, snorkeling, or scuba diving. If you are looking for a fun activity to do with family or friends check out one of the many kayaking tours  that leave from this beach.  The tours are guided and led by local experts who share interesting facts about La Jolla and part of the tour includes a journey through a sea cave.  Just 7 minutes south is La Jolla Cove and the coast walk trail. Both are great places to explore La Jolla and view San Diego's famous sea lions. Just 15 minutes north is the popular Torrey Pines State Beach which boasts miles of hiking trails and beautiful ocean views.  Where to eat : La Jolla Cove is surrounded by a neighborhood, so unfortunately there are not any restaurants along the beach but there are several within walking distance along Avenida De La Playa. I recommend packing food or eating at a nearby restaurant in La Jolla before going to the beach. You can find some ideas on where to eat for brunch in my, T he Best Spots for Weekend Brunch in La Jolla  post. # 3 Moonlight State Beach     Moonlight Beach is located 30 minutes north of downtown San Diego in the beach town of Encinitas. This hidden gem has gorgeous views of coastal cliffs and is just a few steps from shopping and restaurants along Highway 101.  Where to Park : Free parking is available in a nearby parking lot on C Street. There is usually street parking available.  What to do : After lounging for a few hours, I highly recommend walking less than 5 minutes to explore the shops and restaurants along Highway 101. If you are looking for a unique activity to do check out Candles on Tap ,  San Diego's first custom candle bar.  What to eat: My favorites are The Taco Stand  and  URBN Pizza .  The Taco Stand is a local favorite serving up some of the best tacos and California Burritos in San Diego. URBN pizza is another local favorite with a few locations throughout the city serving delicious coal-fired pizzas. # 2 Coronado Beach  A short drive from downtown San Diego, Coronado Beach is ranked among the top beaches in the USA and is the perfect place to experience full-on vacation vibes. This beach has miles and miles of beautiful sandy beaches. Coronado Beach is located on the famous Coronado Island and is home to the iconic Hotel Del Coronado which was constructed in the late 1800s. Where to Park : There is plenty of free street parking near and around the beach. Like the other beaches on this list, parking fills quickly, so it's best to get there early.   What to do : Relax, unwind and explore. This beach is so relaxing and has a nice family-friendly atmosphere. There is a lot to do nearby, so when you are done relaxing, take a short walk to one of the many shops and restaurants. If you want to do something active, hop on your bike or rent a bike and ride along the Coronado Bike Loop. What to eat: Coronado is home to a few delicious restaurants. One of my favorite places to eat is The Little Frenchie a Persian-style cafe that has won several Michelin awards! #1  Mission Beach   Located just 15 minutes from downtown San Diego, Mission Beach is a popular beach in San Diego.  If you want that So Cal beach vibe experience, this is the place to visit.  This beach has it all, from an amusement park, beachside bars/restaurants, shops, and a boardwalk.  Where to Park: There is plenty of free parking located near the beach and there is also street parking available. During the Summer months, parking can be a challenge and I have noticed that many of the parking spots are made for smaller compact cars.  What to do: There is so much to do at this beach. This is a popular place for beach volleyball, surfing, lounging, picnic areas, and bonfires. The boardwalk is a lively place and has several restaurants that line the boardwalk.
